Advocate Harbour Sea Kayaking base for NovaShores Kayak Adventures

East Dover - an unspoiled coastal community A light summer fog adds a sense of mystery to a secluded cover where only kayakers can go.

East Dover lies in a splendidly protected Atlantic harbor which, thousands of years ago, time and the elements carved out of Nova Scotia's South Shore. Today's village remains totally unspoiled. Here the lobster traps are not for sale. They are still being used by the active fishing community where Cape Islanders are the favored method of transportation.

Rum-runners and privateer's

The area where we kayak has a fascinating human history, written by the hardy fishermen who have eked a living from the sea for the past couple of centuries. The bay itself also offers ideal waters for kayaking and diving and some of the names of the uninhabited islands provide reminders of the days (long past) when they were favored by rum-runners and privateer's for anchorage.

Unique preservation area

Between East Dover and Peggy' s Cove we paddle along the preservation areaA freshwater lake on Dover Island., a unique landscape where impressive granite boulders are spread randomly by the melting ice that dropped them twenty thousand years ago. On the almost barren rocks you might discover a rare orchid and be sure to see insect eating Pitcher Plants. Yellow, gray and brown lichens strive to live on the tundra, while Juniper, wild Rhododendron and Sheep Laurel put color and scent to the pristine beauty of the area. On our full day tours we stop for lunch and a hike to a look off where you have breathtaking views of the rugged Atlantic coastline.

Aquatic world and islands to explore

The incredibly clear ocean water holds an abundance of marine life. The kayak allows you a first class view to a fascinating world, that's unknown to most people. Mussels, sea urchins, colorful starfish and an occasional school of fish makes it thrilling to look down amongst swaying kelp and bladder wrack.

There are numerous uninhabited islands in the area waiting to be explored. Some like the mysterious Dover Castle invites no visitors except the sea birds while other islands offer a smooth landing for kayaks on a mix of flat rock bed and sea weeds.

What else is there to do near this location?  Well, we are 40 minutes from Halifax, which has a great number of interesting sights and activities.  I would say your best bet is to check out The Greater Halifax Visitor Guide which has a wealth of information on this area.  Near our departure point there is an excellent dining facility called the Rhubarb Grill Cafe in Indian Harbour.  For something lighter we recommend Tea & Treasures, a little further down the road in Indian Harbour. We can point you to some wonderful coastal hikes within minutes of our departure point.  For accommodations please check our where to stay page .
