Recipes

We are so grateful that the dishes we create with so much love are receiving rave reviews!

Here, we share our favourite recipes. Everything tastes better if you grow your own greens or buy them fresh from a local small-scale farmer. We make sure that the majority of our ingredients are organic, and if not grown here, that they are fair trade.

For ingredients that we cannot grow ourselves, we partner with local farms and co-operatives, such as Just Us! Coffee & Tea, Speerville Flour Mill, and Fieldstead Farm. Sometimes, we also get some catch of the day from a local fisherman – even though our menu is mostly vegetarian. We cater to most dietary restrictions and can easily make a meal vegan, gluten-free, etc. if you let us know well in advance.

Ann Van Rheenen

Beer Bread
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 bottle of Rickard’s Red (or other sweet-ish dark or amber beer)
  • 3 Tbsp canola oil
  • 1 Tbsp honey

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl and wet ingredients in a smaller bowl. Pour the combined wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ones and combine over 2-3 times. Put into an oiled pan. Bake for 45-55 min at 375 F / 190 C (not convection).

Kayak Cookies
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups quick cooking oats
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp vanila
  • 1 egg or 1 Tbsp apple sauce
  • 1/3 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbs baking powder

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare a well greased cookie sheet. Mix the butter, sugar, egg and vanilla together until creamy. Combine the dry ingredients together in a separate bowl. Combine the two together. You may need to use your hands, the batter is very dry. On a greased cookie sheet, form the cookies into the size you like. Pat them down with your hands or a fork, otherwise they will fall apart while cooking and eating.

Bake for 18 – 20 minutes. Remove from the cookie sheet immediately and cool on racks.
